4 fun Thanksgiving projects your kids will love

Get your kids in the Thanksgiving spirit with one of these fun turkey day projects. Whether you and your little ones want to make festive treats the family can gobble up, a turkey centerpiece that will liven up the table or a pilgrim hat made out of household items, there is a project here your family will love:

Coffee Can Pilgrim Hat

mcanpilgrimhatUsing a coffee can, construction paper, scissors, glue, and paint, you can help your kids create a pilgrim hat. DLTK notes that if you cut a slid in the lid of the coffee can, the hat can also double as a piggy bank.

Materials:

  • Clean coffee can with a lid
  • Black and orange paint
  • Paint brush
  • Black and yellow construction paper
  • Scissors
  • Glue

Instructions:

  • Cut a small slit in the middle of the lid.
  • OPTIONAL:  Cut a small slit in the middle of the lid if you would like to use your pilgrim hat to collect spare change. Paint the bottom inch or two of the can orange. Let dry.
  • Put the lid on the can and paint the can black but leaving a ring at the bottom orange.
  • Let dry. Cut a black circle out of construction paper. We used a plate to trace the circle first. Glue this circle to the bottom of the can to make a brim for the hat. Make a buckle out of contrution paper.Cut a square with rounded corners out of a piece of yellow construction paper. The yellow square should be a little bigger than the orange stripe at the bottom of the can.
  • Cut a slightly smaller square with rounded corners out of black construction paper.
  • mcanpilgrimhat2Cut a small notch out of the side of the black square so it looks like a “C”. (See picture at right)
  • Glue the notched black square on the yellow square and glue the yellow square to the hat to look like a buckle.

Tabletop Turkey

No Thanksgiving table should be without one of Parenting’s tabletop turkeys. As long as you have a paper cup and some basic craft supplies, you and your kids can easily make this fun holiday decoration.
Materials:

  • Paper cup
  • Brown paint
  • Pom-pom
  • Construction paper
  • Glue
  • Googly eyes

Instructions:

  • Paint a paper cup brown. Turn the cup upside down and glue a pom-pom to the top of the cup for the head.
  • Cut nine 4-inch leaf shapes from different colors of construction paper. Fold a 1-inch-square piece of orange construction paper in half; cut a triangle shape out of the folded paper for the beak. Using a 2-inch square of red paper folded in half, cut a heart shape to create the turkey’s wattle.
  • Glue the beak and wattle to the pom-pom. Add googly eyes. Glue on the “feathers.”
